I’ve been learning how to speak Italian and looking for ways to fully immerse myself in the culture. When my Italian coworker suggested I visit a small coastal town called Tropea, I didn’t think twice. And let me just say—I am SO happy I took her advice.

To say Tropea is beautiful is an understatement. Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, this charming town feels like a dreamy postcard come to life. But it’s not just about looks—Tropea has a soul. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, where every corner is filled with warmth, and where the locals greet you with genuine smiles and a “Buongiorno!”

I spent my days wandering through narrow cobblestone streets, savoring creamy gelato in the sun, and sipping espresso in tiny piazzas while listening to the melodic rhythm of the Italian language around me. I even practiced with locals, who were more than happy to help me improve my Italian. (Grazie, Tropea!)

And the food—mamma mia! The red onions from Tropea are famously sweet and used in everything from pasta to salads. I had one of the best meals of my life at a cliffside trattoria, where the view of the sun setting over the sea was just as satisfying as the fresh seafood on my plate.

Tropea gave me more than just a travel experience—it gave me a sense of connection. To the language. To the culture. To the people.
